In this week’s Inside EMS podcast, hosts Chris Cebollero and Kelly Grayson discuss why an ambulance service in Maryland is closing its doors after 32 years.
“It’s a shame to see this,” Kelly said. “It’s like big box stores pushing out the small mom-and-pop stores, and I guess the same thing is happening in EMS.”
Chris and Kelly also debate how important an EMTs personal appearance is in their clinical issue segment.
“Some of our patients are going to look at you differently if you’re pierced or tatted up,” Kelly said. “There is a line where it’s tasteful and not tasteful. But, the thing is, that’s my line and it’s open to interpretation.”
Chris agrees that professionalism and appearance is the epitome of who EMS professionals are.
“When it comes to professionalism, we do not take pride, overall as a career field, in the way that we wear our uniforms,” Chris said. “The way that we look in our uniform is really an addition to the calling card of who we are in gaining public trust. Why are there so many people against looking professional in their uniforms?”
They also interview paramedic Roger Morgan about the development of the American College of Paramedicine.
