WAKEENEY, Kan. — A Kansas teenager’s slip and fall on the ice led to a unique impalement injury involving a pair of pliers.

Joey Zeman, 15, described the events that led to a pair of pliers getting stuck in his side, just above his hip, KWCH reported.

“I was shoveling snow or scooping snow with the skid loader here. The pickup was parked about here,” Zeman said. “I was walking over to get something and I just fell right here.”

When Zeman stood up, it was clear he needed immediate medical attention.

“I got up and noticed my pliers weren’t in my pouch. I looked down and they were inside me,” he said.

Zeman initially received treatment at a hospital in WaKenney and was later flown to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

No major surgery was needed and Zeman returned home after a short hospital stay.
