Hero of the Week: Girl helps medics with sign language

A 10-year-old noticed the victim of a car crash appeared to be deaf, and ran over to help medics communicate with the injured woman

The notion that ‘EMS is never off-duty’ speaks to the overwhelming willingness of those in the profession to put their skills to use whenever they’re needed.

We’d like to recognize this 10-year-old girl from Kansas who operates by the same code. She learned sign language from her mother, and noticed an ambulance crew treating a car crash victim who appeared to be deaf.

“I saw that she was signing, so I decided to go help,” Yesenia Diosdado said. “I was really nervous.”

The Rising Star Elementary School students received a medal and certificate of thanks from Johnson County Med-Act, and we’d like to honor her as our EMS1 Hero of the Week.
