NEW YORK — A woman with a prosthetic eye filed a federal lawsuit against FDNY, saying the department won’t hire her as a paramedic due to the impairment.
Nadya Buttigieg claims she meets all the job requirements, and has been working as a paramedic for years, including at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Medical Center, the New York Post reports.
“I just don’t understand it,” she said of the rejection by FDNY.
According to court papers, she lost her left eye in a 1995 “vicious stabbing attack,” and has 20/20 vision in her right eye.
She “has made an excellent adaptation … developing the depth perception required for driving and performing all functions of a paramedic,” she said in the lawsuit.
The city said it has not yet received the legal claim.
