MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — An off-duty firefighter saved the life of his best friend after responding to an EMS call while running errands.

Mount Airy, N.C., Fire Engineer Scotty Wolfe had just finished his shift when he heard the call on his scanner, but had no idea he knew the patient so well, according to WXII.

Upon arrival, he found a man on the ground who wasn’t breathing and had no pulse, and began CPR.

Only when someone mentioned the victim’s name did he realize it was his friend, Ron Haynes, who witnesses say was electrocuted in a work-related accident.

“My heart sunk a little bit. My adrenaline rose, and I just kept working,” Wolfe told WXII.

After CPR and a shock from a defibrillator, Engineer Wolfe successfully revived Haynes to avoid what could have otherwise been a devastating loss.

“I was emotionally just a wreck. I cried,” Wolfe said. “I could see his little boy grow up with mine and not have a father.”
