PHOENIX — A Phoenix paramedic and his family suffered a tough week after they endured a medical emergency and a devastating fire days apart.

Fox10Phoenix.com reported the week got off to a rough start when paramedic Mark Blackburn’s wife suffered a heart attack on Monday.

Blackburn’s wife was released from the hospital on Wednesday. While getting settled back in their home, Blackburn had to undergo emergency oral surgery. After returning from the surgery, he and his wife were asleep when they smelled smoke.

“The outside of our house was on fire and it ended up burning all the way through burning the whole house down. The only thing we made it out with was one of our dogs,” Blackburn said.

The family lost a kitten, dog and a ferret to the fire as well as all of their belongings.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the Blackburn family.
