LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles Fire Department recruit was killed Monday morning on the 101 Freeway in Studio City while rendering aid at the site of a traffic collision.

Jacob Fuerte, 22, was fatally injured shortly after 5 a.m. near Vineland Avenue. He was on his way to routine academy training in his personal vehicle when he stopped to assess the scene of a crash, said LAFD Capt. Erik Scott.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the crash involved a sedan, a Jeep Wrangler and a truck towing portable restrooms. Other details about the initial crash were not available. Scott said Fuerte was likely struck by a separate vehicle.

Fuerte, who joined the department in February, was the son of an LAFD paramedic.

“Being raised in an LAFD family, recruit Fuerte understood the importance of helping those in need,” Scott said. “We extend our deepest sympathy to immediate family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
