The driver, a 22-year-old man, died at the scene after his vehicle struck a MedTrust ambulance

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — A 22-year-old man was killed after his car collided head-on with a privately-owned ambulance.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 2:35 a.m. on July 27. A 2004 Toyota sedan was traveling south on U.S. Highway 17 Alternate when it struck a northbound 2016 Ford ambulance near Sullivan’s Landing Road, the Post and Courier reports.

The driver of the Toyota, identified by the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office as Nathaniel Cooper of Adams Run, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. An autopsy is scheduled for July 30.

Two people were inside the ambulance at the time of the crash. Neither sustained injuries, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The ambulance was owned by MedTrust, a private mobile healthcare provider based in South Carolina. A spokesperson for Dorchester County confirmed the company’s involvement.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
