Four people were stabbed after a crash on the Outer Loop near Annandale, prompting Virginia State Police to shoot a knife-wielding suspect

ANNANDALE, Va. — A road rage incident on Interstate 495 near Annandale left four people suffering stab wounds and prompted Virginia State Police to shoot a knife-wielding man, authorities said.

WUSA 9 reported troopers were called to the Outer Loop of the Beltway at 1:17 p.m. on Feb. 28 following reports of a road rage confrontation after a crash, police said. When they arrived, they found four stabbing victims and a man with a knife. Police said the man ignored commands to drop the weapon, and troopers shot him in self-defense.

The incident shut down southbound I-495 and caused traffic to back up for about six miles.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries and later died, Virginia State Police said.

A 39-year-old woman and a dog were among the stabbing victims. Both died from their injuries, police said. The conditions of the other victims were not immediately available.

Police said the stabbings happened after a crash, which remains under investigation.
