LAKES OF THE FOUR SEASONS, Ind. — A grenade detonated after it was found by a family searching through a relative’s belongings, killing one man and injuring two teenagers.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office tells WLS Channel 7 the explosion killed Bryan Niedert, 47. Two of his children, an 18-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy, were taken to a hospital after being injured by shrapnel from the grenade, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

The sheriff’s department says the explosion occurred just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the family’s home in Lakes of the Four Seasons. The victims were going through items belonging to a grandfather when they found the grenade.

The sheriff’s office says someone pulled the pin from the grenade and it detonated.

Niedert was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office says. The Porter County Bomb Squad was called to the home to make sure there were no other explosive devices in the home.

The sheriff’s office says it’s continuing to investigate the explosion.
