LOS ANGELES — Medical drama “The Pitt” earned the top honor at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, taking home the award for Outstanding Drama Series, according to People.
In an emotional acceptance speech on Sept. 14, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill dedicated the win to healthcare workers and first responders.
“I want to dedicate this on behalf of everyone to all the healthcare workers, frontline first responders,” Gemmill said. “Respect them, protect them, trust them. Thank you!”
The series, produced by Warner Bros. and streaming on HBO Max, was among the most nominated shows of the night with 13 nods. Actor Noah Wyle, who stars as Dr. Robby, was also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
“This is insane. Thank you so much to the Academy,” Gemmill said, thanking executive producer John Wells and cast members including Wyle, Shawn Hatosy, Katherine LaNasa, Taylor Dearden and Fiona Dourif. “We wouldn’t be out here without you guys.”
Set over the course of a single ER shift, “The Pitt” has been praised for its fast-paced, emotionally resonant portrayal of emergency medicine. Wyle, who has spent more than three decades in Hollywood, called the show’s success “overwhelming.”
“I gave up hope that this was going to be something that my career was going to be part of again,” Wyle told People. “It’s really amazing.”
