We live in glass houses.
Early on we might be self-conscious about it;
we’re very aware of the public nature of our lives.
People recognize us as the ones who responded to their 911 call.
They do a double take when they see us in the grocery store.
Over time we grow into it,
and often don’t think about it.
But they’re still watching —
our communities, our neighbors,
the people who come into our care
the people we’re called to lead
the people we’re called to serve.
They see through the walls of our glass houses.
And we honor their trust
by leaving the shades up.
“If the day ever came when I could do this work and it didn’t bother me, that would be the day I needed to quit and find another job.”
