TWIN FALLS, Idaho — A BASE jumper died Monday when his parachute failed to open during a jump from the Perrine Bridge.
Bryan Turner, 32, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, died at St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center after a helicopter lifted him from the canyon floor, said Lori Stewart, Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. Turner was living in New York City, Stewart said.
About noon, Turner’s fellow BASE jumpers and nearby kayakers called 911 when he hit the water after his parachute failed to open. They performed CPR until paramedics arrived, Stewart said.
An Air St. Luke’s helicopter landed in the canyon at about 12:20 p.m. Rescuers appeared to be taking turns performing CPR on Turner for about 30 minutes. Sheriff’s office rescuers arrived by boat. The Twin Falls Fire Department also responded.
About three dozen people gathered on the walkway at the top of the canyon watching the rescue efforts.
Just before 1 p.m., paramedics loaded Turner into the waiting helicopter. It appeared paramedics had put an oxygen mask and an IV on him.
Art Selin, of Twin Falls, said he saw Turner hit the water. There was no sign that his parachute had partially opened, Selin said.
“He went right in the water without a chute,” he said.
