Indiana EMTs prepare for increased scope of practice

The Indiana EMS Commission has approved revisions to the scope of practice for EMRs, EMTs and AEMTs in the state, which will go into effect on March 1.

INDIANAPOLIS — EMTs across Indiana will soon be able to use more skills and procedures when treating patients after the state EMS commission approved scope of practice revisions in December.

Under the changes, which will go into effect on March 1, new EMT and AEMT skills will include:

CPAP ventilatory assistance;
End tidal CO2/waveform capnography;
Nebulized bronchodilators; and
OTC pain management.

The revisions also allow for nasopharyngeal airway insertion, pulse oximetry monitoring and oral glucose administration by emergency medical responders.

EMS providers are offered courses through the state’s Acadis training portal to prepare for when the changes go into effect next month.
