Dad delivers baby in car; cancels ambulance

He called 9-1-1 when his wife went into labor and then called back to say baby was fine

LAFAYETTE, Calif. — A man delivered his son in a car on the side of a Northern California freeway and then called off an ambulance and drove the baby boy and the mother to a hospital.

California Highway Patrol Officer John Fransen tells the San Francisco Chronicle that the man called 911 about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to report his wife was going into labor.

He had been heading to a hospital on Highway 24, east of San Francisco, at the time.

After the woman gave birth, authorities say the man called back, telling dispatchers the baby was fine and he didn't need an ambulance because he was driving to a hospital a few minutes away.

Fransen says the newborn is doing great and the man is happy to be a dad.
