EDMONTON, Alberta — The recent on-the-job suicide of an Edmonton paramedic has sparked a front-line task force to develop recommendations to improve mental health for the front-line workers.

Dale Weiss, executive director of EMS for the AHS Edmonton zone, said the provincial task force was struck shortly after the death of paramedic Greg Turner, who took his own life at the end of his night shift inside the Kildare station last month.

Turner’s death left many of his colleagues shaken, said Weiss, and has raised awareness about the mental health of paramedics. The task force will spend the next two months talking with staff as to what they think could be done to improve practices for mental health.
