NORTH HAVEN, Conn. — An agreement between the firefighter’s union and the town heralds the long-awaited start-up of a paramedic program that will enhance emergency medical services in North Haven, where 74 percent of 911 calls are health-related.
While North Haven firefighters are often first responders to an emergency (and some firefighters have even qualified as paramedics), the fire department is currently able to respond only as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and is therefore less able to immediately provide the more advanced medical treatment available from a paramedic.
First Selectman Janet McCarty announced last week that the town and the union representing the town’s career firefighters approved an agreement that establishes the first-ever paramedic program in North Haven’s history.
