EMS1 Featured Survey: Simulation

In February 2013, EMS1 conducted a survey on the state of Simulation in the industry. This survey represents a poll of 177 Emergency Medical Responders, Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, and equivalent. We have posted the results to the survey below.

Highlights:

  • 86% of responders have used a basic CPR manikin that allow ventilation and chest compression
  • 53% of responders feel that the more advanced the manikin, the better its use in training
  • 67% of responders have participated in some type of driver training program specific to EMS

Demographics:
Question 1: Which of the following training situations have you participated in?

SUMMARY: 85% of respondents have participated in scenarios that use fellow students as patients, and limited equipment that permitted some assessment and treatment activities to occur (i.e., taking a blood pressure, applying a splint).

Question 2: What types of manikins have you used in your training in the past twelve months?.

SUMMARY: 86% of respondents have used basic CPR manikins that allow ventilation and chest compression.

Question 3: How do you feel about the use of manikins in training activities?

SUMMARY: 53% of survey respondents believe the more advanced the manikin, the better its use in training.

Question 4: What types of manikins have you used to perform training in the past twelve months?

SUMMARY: 84% have used basic CPR manikins that allow ventilation and chest compression.

Question 5: How often do you use a manikin in training activities?

SUMMARY: 49% of respondents sometimes use manikins in training activities.

Question 6: How well prepared are you to use your training manikins?

SUMMARY: 46%

are prepared to use most of their manikins to most of their capabilities.

Question 7: Assume that you have received a new training manikin. What would be your ideal way of learning how to use it to its fullest capabilities?

SUMMARY: Over 40% would prefer to observe another trainer work the device then practice on their own.

Question 8: Have you ever participated in some type of driver training program specific to EMS?

SUMMARY: Almost 68% of respondants have participated in some type of driver training program that is specific to EMS.

Question 9: If you have, in what format did the training occur?

SUMMARY: Almost 36% of respondents have participated in a type of driver training program that is a combination of the above formats.
