With the increasing importance of end-tidal CO2 levels in a wide variety of patient treatment scenarios, the EMMA capnograph from Masimo brings all of the critical data that you need as a provider right in front of your eyes, even as you ventilate your patient. Let’s take a look at some of the features of the device, and learn how it works to enable the best possible outcomes for your patient encounters.
Right out of the box, the EMMA capnograph is ready to go. Simply turn it on, and in about 15 seconds it delivers full accuracy in EtCO2 and respiration rates. Looking at it, you will see a continuous capnogram display right on the front of the device, in an easy-to-read presentation… when you’re doing compressions, you will be able to evaluate the depth and effectiveness of those compressions by monitoring EtCO2 levels, and also to recognize when changes have occurred in those EtCO2 levels which would indicate a return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC).

The EMMA device itself is incredibly lightweight, small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, and can even be worn on a lanyard, ensuring that it is always immediately accessible at a scene without having another heavy or bulky piece of equipment to bring to your patient’s side when minutes and seconds count. Given that the environment in which resuscitative care, especially, frequently occurs is unpredictable, the EMMA is also water-resistant, to help it remain reliable even when conditions are less than optimal. Also helping to maintain reliability, the EMMA device requires calibration only once per year (far less often than with built-in sidestream monitors) to remain accurate, removing a hurdle to consistent use in the field by ensuing that your thousandth reading is as accurate as your first.

The EMMA device communicates with you not only through its display, but also through a series of auditory alarms (with visual counterparts) which indicate immediately such time-sensitive problems as the adapter having become clogged, not having an adapter inserted correctly, a patient becoming apneic, whether or not the battery is low, and also an adjustable high-value and low-value alarm for EtCO2 levels themselves. Since alarm fatigue can reduce our ability to respond effectively to those alerts, the device also features a dedicated button to silence them for a period of time to allow for care to take place to correct the problems. The battery itself will last for up to 10 hours with two standard AAA lithium batteries, helping to keep your continuous cost-of-operation down and ensuring that you can continue to use the device without having to worry about recharging proprietary batteries.

One other feature of the EMMA device is that the same adapter can be used for both adult and pediatric patients, the most common of calls in which it would be utilized, helping to avoid the need to have multiple sizes of adapters on-hand to choose from in an already-complex care environment. The separate infant adapter is clearly marked and differentiated for the thankfully lesser-frequency, but just as high intensity, calls in which our youngest patients need our help. The device’s included carrying case is bright and easy to identify in your bag, and helps to protect the device (already ruggedized, mind you) and keep all relevant supplies immediately at-hand when deploying the device.

Overall, the EMMA capnograph represents a revolution in miniaturization of capnography while still maintaining the highest standards of performance in the unpredictable EMS environment.
