BENNINGTON, Vt.— The National Highway Safety Traffic Administration has begun an investigation into a fatal ambulance crash last week on West Road, according to local police.
Bennington Police Sgt. Lloyd Dean and an investigator with NHTSA spent several hours at the Bennington Police Department’s impound yard on Burgess Road Tuesday trying to reconstruct the accident. Dean said such an investigation is "not normally" conducted, but was requested by the state of Vermont "because of the seriousness of the crash."
No new information has been uncovered, however, and police remain puzzled by the cause of the crash that killed longtime paramedic and EMT Dale R. Long, Dean said. The investigator, who works for a company sub-contracted by NHTSA, will verify findings made by Dean, the Bennington Police Department’s accident reconstruction specialist, Dean said.
