VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — One man has learned that ambulances don’t make the best getaway cars.

Beach resident Albert Jermaine White, 19, has been accused of trying to steal an ambulance to flee the scene of a hit-and-run car crash, police said.

The incident began around 4:40 p.m. Monday when the suspect drove a Nissan Maxima over a traffic lane, jumped a curb and hit a pedestrian walking in the 1700 block of Old Donation Pkwy., according to police.

The preliminary investigation revealed that White might have been fighting with two passengers in the car at the time of the crash, police said.

The suspect fled the scene with one of the passengers and crashed his vehicle into a tree in the 1600 block of Old Donation, police said. The second passenger jumped out of the vehicle. When emergency medical technicians responded to treat White , he attempted to steal their ambulance, police said.

An emergency medical technician was able to remove the suspect from the ambulance, police said, but suffered a large cut to his arm in the process.

Police say the suspect then ran to the Atria nursing home, punched a woman in the face while she was standing by the front entrance, and hid inside, where police found and arrested him.

White, of the 800 block of Morgan Trail, has been charged with abduction, felony assault of an emergency medical technician, simple assault, attempted grand larceny, and possession of marijuana, according to a news release.

He is being held in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond.
