LOS ANGELES — An ambulance company settled a lawsuit involving an EMT who allegedly fell asleep at the wheel of a company rig and slammed into a disabled car on a highway, injuring a passenger.

Jeff Johnson sued Americare Medservices after facing mounting medical bills from back surgery to correct injuries from the crash, CBS reports. The case was settled for an undisclosed amount of money two weeks after Johnson’s attorneys acquired the video.

Ambulance dash cam footage shows the EMT, who has not been named, struggling to stay awake and appearing to nod off, Johnson’s attorneys said. There was a patient and a paramedic in the back.

California law allows private ambulance companies to schedule drivers for 24-hour shifts.
