SYDNEY, Australia — Paramedics were forced to lug a cancer patient down 40 steps after a council bolted shut a gate preventing an ambulance from reaching him.
And in the face of Rinie Vanzwol’s near-death experience, the council has finally backed down on its decision to padlock the gate on a vacant neighbouring driveway, which last week meant the ambulance could not get through, Knox Leader reports.
Two ambulances rushed to Mr Vanzwol’s Upper Ferntree Gully home last Wednesday after the Hodgkin’s lymphoma patient reported acute chest pain.
Mr Vanzwol does not have a driveway — more than 40 steep narrow steps lead from his front door to the road.
