LEOMINSTER, Mass. — Builders have constructed several new houses on the outskirts of the city in recent years, in areas that could be hard to reach during a snow storm, according to Fire Chief Ronald Pierce.

That’s why the Fire Department’s new ambulance will have four-wheel-drive, he said Friday.

“It’s going to be like a reserve ambulance and it will have the capabilities during a major storm where we will be able to reach the people that need it,” Pierce said during an interview.

The Fire Department hopes to order the new ambulance, a Ford, on Monday, Pierce said.

It will act as a backup to their current primary ambulance, an International, according to Pierce.

They are trading in an old International to help pay for the Ford. They’re getting $17,500 for the old ambulance, the chief said.

The new vehicle will cost about $133,000 after the trade-in, Pierce said.

It will take four months for the city to get it, he said.
