New EMTs drive ambulances on road cone courses

The training course simulates maneuvers necessary to navigate a residential area to help new recruits get used to the weight and body roll when driving an ambulance

For emergency medical technicians, successfully driving an ambulance requires anticipating the moves of motorists while providing a smooth ride for the paramedic and patient in back.

Ken Campbell discussed those key points Wednesday morning as he deftly maneuvered an ambulance through a series of road cone courses designed to introduce new employees to the sway of the bulky vehicles.

Campbell, an EMT field training officer for EMSA, answered a reporter’s questions while six trainees looked on to see if he would strike any cones at the city’s safety/training facility near Admiral Place and Garnett Road.
