I have to applaud the state of Michigan and its governor for making the gutsy move to save the citizens of Detroit.
Appointing an emergency manager validates that the city’s political apparatus needed assistance to resolve its dire financial situation.
The only bizarre aspect of this resolution was how hard the city politicians fought off the critically needed resources necessary to keep the city from fully imploding.
Dear Detroit politicians: Most sensible Americans would feel something was terribly wrong when public safety can’t respond to calls because they don’t have a way to get there.
True, in some areas of the country we call an ambulance a “bus,” but that’s not to be mistaken for a transit bus. Or a school bus. Your EMS folks know the distinction, and what they need are ambulances that are reliable so they can do their job.
It would be a bonus if the emergency medical responders could have police officers respond to some of the more violent calls to provide, you know, safety. They too would like some safe and reliable vehicles to work in.
They say the vehicles will be delivered within 160 days. This will be a true test of how ready Detroit is to reverse its fortunes and serve its citizens. Any bets?
