BUFFALO, N.Y. — An ambulance designed for premature newborns was debuted in honor of EMS Week.
WKBW reported that the Oishei Children’s Hospital teamed up with AMR and Kaleida Health to design a specialized ambulance for the hospital’s Neonatal Transport Team.
The state-of-the-art ambulance comes equipped with an automatic lift that raises a 300-pound isolette unit, which the team used to have to lift manually, according to WBFO.
The rig has enough equipment for two babies and enough room for four team members, where the former ambulance only had enough room for three.
The team will use the ambulance to safely transport their average number of 300 premature or critically-injured babies annually.
“We want to make sure that when they’re being transported, they’re being transported in the safest, smoothest way possible so that we’re not causing any damage to their brain or to any other body systems,” Oishei Children’s Hospital chief medical officer Dr. Stephen Turkovich said.
AMR Eastern Region chief officer Scott Karaszewski said the ambulance design has been in the works for some time.
“We brought all the disciplines together to build this ambulance,” he said. “We had clinical, we had fleet, we had the builder itself. And we brought everybody to the table to find out what the needs of the hospital were to be.”
