INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Three people are recovering after the ambulance they were riding in crashed into maintenance equipment on I-65 downtown. It’s the first time a Wishard crew has been injured in an accident in nearly a decade.

It happened just before noon Tuesday on I-65 northbound. A Wishard ambulance, transporting a patient on a non-emergency run, crashed into a rolling barricade of INDOT vehicles. The trucks were protecting a road crew cleaning the highway shoulder. The ambulance driver was behind a semi, which was blocking her view.

“She went over to the left lane to do a pass, not realizing that there were more state trucks up ahead, so when she came over to the left lane all of the sudden they were right there. She attempted to make the correction to avoid it but it was too late she made contact with that arrow board at that time,” said Sgt. Anthony Emery, Indiana State Police.
