LOS ANGELES — A 52-year-old man was killed and four other people were injured Monday in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down southbound Interstate 405 in the San Fernando Valley for almost four hours.

The victim, whose identity was not immediately released, had to be extracted from his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the hospital, California Highway Patrol officer Michael Joslin said.

Witnesses reported seeing him drive at a high speed while weaving in and out of traffic, Joslin said.

Three cars and a private ambulance were involved in the accident, which stretched across all southbound lanes, he said.

Four people, including a child, were taken to nearby hospitals with minor to moderate injuries, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Melissa Kelly.

Two ambulance attendants, who were not transporting any patients at the time of the crash, declined medical attention, Kelly said.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
