BETHLEHEM, N.J. — A 46-year-old city man who allegedly crashed into an Allentown ambulance as he tried to chase another man’s vehicle out of a gas station parking lot late Monday night was charged with simple assault, making false reports and related offenses.

City police said William Kanavel of the 1700 block of West Broad Street was at a gas station at Eighth Avenue and West Broad Street at 11:44 p.m. when Robert Jones entered the lot. The two men have a history of getting into disputes, police said.

Kanavel told police he was putting air in his tires when Jones backed into him, knocked him to the ground and then left the lot. He said he then chased Jones, but lost control of his pickup truck as he pulled onto Eighth Avenue and hit the ambulance, driven by Terry Golden, according to court documents.
