Multi-parameter Monitor / Defibrillator Approved for Use on U.S. Army’s Black Hawk MEDEVAC H-60 Helicopters
Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. — Welch Allyn, a leading manufacturer of frontline medical products and solutions, today announced that its’ PIC 50(TM) monitor / defibrillator has been awarded Airworthiness Release (AWR) from the U.S. Army’s Research, Development, and Engineering Command. The U.S. Army’s Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) confirmed medical certification of the device stating that it has proven safety compatibility with Department of Defense criteria and is approved for use aboard MEDEVAC H-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
“We are honored that the U.S. Department of the Army has certified the PIC 50 monitor/debfibrillator for use in flight,” says William Smirles, Senior Product Manager at Welch Allyn. “This attests to the durability, ease of use and reliability of our PIC 50 devices. We manufacture these devices to be able to withstand the toughest environments including warfare. If the U.S. Army certifies it on aircraft designed for battle, it can certainly handle the everyday rigors of emergency medical transport vehicles. The PIC 50 enables healthcare providers on the frontlines to treat patients in a significantly shorter timeframe, which not only improves outcomes but lowers costs associated with delayed treatment outcomes.”
Designed for rugged transport, field applications or in-hospital transport, the PIC 50 combines simplicity and sophistication in one compact, lightweight package. It features dedicated controls for monitoring, defibrillation and treatment parameters, and its innovative design allows custom configurations based on the precise needs of first responders. Future upgrades can easily be performed anytime in the field without changing the size or weight of the unit. In addition, the PIC 50 can speed the advanced treatment of cardiac patients by getting data into the right hands sooner using the Welch Allyn SmartLink(TM) Wireless System to transfer 12-lead ECG date directly from the device through a PDA or cell phone to a cardiologist.
In addition to PIC 50s and AEDs, Welch Allyn also manufactures and markets a complete line of crash cart defibrillators and multi-parameter monitors for the treatment of sudden cardiac arrest and related cardiopulmonary emergency events. In 2004, the company’s Propaq Encore® monitors were approved for all phases of flight aboard U.S. Air Force aircraft.
