WARREN, R.I. — Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) John Cummings has had enough. After the Barrington resident was terminated in November from the Warren Rescue Squad for violating Fire Department protocol, the EMT claims the Fire Department Board of Engineers ousted him unfairly.
“I’m confused about the whole thing. I don’t understand it,” said Mr. Cummings. “The department needs EMTs.”
According to Fire Chief Al Galinelli, Mr. Cummings was finally terminated from the squad for violating a standard operating procedure (SOP) after he bought royal blue outergear worth at least $1,300 to protect him during rescue calls. But the problem wasn’t the gear. An infraction was cited after the EMT failed to ask the chief if the suit was the appropriate color before he bought it. According to the chief, he prefers all rescue personnel to wear black gear with lime green stripes.
