NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. — Two off-duty EMTs received commendations for saving a stabbing victim in the city.
Mobile Life Support Services EMTs Shelagh Sweeney, 23, and Zach Bundschuh, 25, saw a man actively bleeding from his neck, Record Online reports. Without their equipment, they were forced to improvise.
Sweeny applied pressure to the wound using her own shirt and Bundschuh assessed the patient until FDNY paramedics arrived on scene. They lowered the man to the ground and with little stimulation, he woke up and spoke to investigators. The FDNY then transported him to the hospital.
“This is what it means to be an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) provider,” Mobile President and CEO Scott Woebse said. “You are not just trained to do a job; you are trained to help others in their time of need, anytime, anywhere, whether you’re ‘on the clock’ or not, and that’s exactly what Shelagh and Zach did that night. We are so proud to have them as part of our team.”

Sweeny is a fire captain at the Hurley Volunteer Fire Department and has been working with Mobile Life for four years. In 2018, she became the first female to receive the Hurley Firefighter of the Year award. Bundschuh also volunteers with the West Hurley Fire Department and has been working with Mobile Life for three years.
