BROOMKALL, Pa. — As a son, Sean Johnston could only watch as his mother succumbed to septic shock.
As a supervisor with the Marple Township Ambulance Corps (MTAC) EMS, he is involved in a program which will hopefully improve the care of patients suffering from the syndrome.
MTAC initiated a year-long pilot program earlier this month to improve the care of septic patients by providing early recognition, early fluids intervention and early antibiotic administration by hospital staff.
The anticipated result is the ability to decrease the time needed for the ER staff to identify a sepsis patient and improve the person’s medical outcome. MTAC is the only department in the state conducting the study.
