BROOKLYN — An FDNY EMT suffered a broken nose and received stitches above his eye after being attacked by a patient at a New York hospital.
Ricardo Cervoni was treating an intoxicated patient at Woodhull Medical Center when a second EMS crew brought in another patient to be treated for depression.
The second patient became angry about not being offered a bed, screaming “How long do I have to wait here? Where’s my bed?” Cervoni told the New York Daily News. “As soon as he was done with that, that’s when he shoved me.”
Cervoni said it was unprovoked attack: “Prior to that, I’d spoken no words to him. He was not my patient. I barely made eye contact with this guy.”
The patient charged Cervoni, slamming his head against the metal frame of a plexiglass barrier.
“I was gushing blood everywhere,” he told the Daily News.
The assailant, Jamaine Williams, was arrested by police who happened to be in the emergency room at the time of the incident. Williams was charged with assault on an EMT, menacing, harassment and obstructing governmental administration, police said.
