HIGHLAND, Ill. — The wife of a paramedic who dove into freezing water to rescue an infant from a sinking SUV recently expressed her pride in a message dedicated to their two sons.

Paramedic Todd Zobrist rescued the 3-month-old infant after an SUV veered into a lake last week. Zobrist dove into freezing water to rescue the infant, and performed CPR on the roof of the vehicle.

Following the rescue, Zobrist’s wife, Jessica, published a post on WordPress. She addressed their young sons and discussed what it means to be a hero.

Zobrist emphasized that her husband’s heroic actions was not a random one, and that he spends extensive time training and preparing for such situations. “I want you to know that before most people have a huge success, there’s so much work and commitment that goes into it first,” she wrote.

In her post, she also told her sons that they do not have to rescue an unconscious baby from a submerged car to be a hero. Instead, she said, “You have to find something you’re passionate about, work hard daily to be the best at that job and be prepared to be under-recognized for your efforts.”

Regardless, Zobrist wrote her sons will fill the shoes of “a man who loves you so very much and is an amazing role model of selflessness, bravery and strength.”
