SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A new medical director has been chosen to oversee the San Antonio Fire Department’s EMS division.

Dr. David Miramontes, who has served as medical director of the Washington, D.C., fire department since 2011, was selected by both SAFD and University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for the position.

If his contract is approved by the City Council, he will begin work in San Antonio on Oct. 30, authorities said.

Miramontes’ position is expected to include a secondary function as an assistant clinical professor of medicine with the health science center, participating in clinical practices at the University Hospital Emergency Center.

“Dr. Miramontes has a solid reputation of being an excellent clinician,” Chief Charles Hood said in a media statement. “His vision, experience and reputation elevated him above all of the excellent candidates.”

Interim medical director Emily Kidd, who has filled the spot since April 2013, will return to her previous position as assistant medical director when Miramontes takes over.
