SPLENDORA, Texas — A baby in Montgomery County was saved by a police chief who sprang into action Friday.

Splendora ISD Police Chief Rex Evans was on routine patrol, driving from school to school around 2 p.m. when a panicked family flagged him down at a traffic light at Business 59 and FM 2090.

The family in a minivan told him they had a baby inside who was not breathing.

“When I saw the panic on everybody’s face in the vehicle, I knew there was something very serious,” Evans said. “Something was seriously wrong.”

The dramatic bodycam video shows Evans pull the baby from the van and start CPR.

“Come on, baby,” Evans said while pumping the baby’s chest.

Just as paramedics pulled up, the baby started breathing again.

“It was such a relief to hear that baby cry,” Evans said. "... It hits you right in the heart.”

The child was rushed to an area hospital for evaluation and is in a good condition, Evans said.
