Utah man dies, swept away by rip tide in Hawaii

Lifeguards and beachgoers tried to rescue him; he was unresponsive when responders performed CPR and was pronounced at a local hospital

KAUAI, Hawaii — A 69-year-old Utah man apparently drowned in waters off Anini Beach on Kauai over the weekend.

The man’s identity has yet to be released.

At about 3 p.m. Sunday, the visitor was walking in shallow waters near the channel when he was swept into the ocean by a rip current, according to a county news release. Lifeguards arrived to the scene on jet skis when they saw several beachgoers attempting to rescue the man using paddle boards and a dive buoy.

The man was unresponsive when firefighters initiated CPR. He was transported to to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

This is the sixth drowning off Kauai this year.
