GARLAND, Texas — A 5-year-old girl was resuscitated by firefighters and an elderly man was taken to the hospital in separate house fires Wednesday in Garland.
The girl was trapped inside a home in the 3700 block of Knight Lane after a fire broke out in the attic about 5:40 a.m., Garland fire Capt. Merrill Balanciere said.
Rescuers climbed through a window to pull her out. She suffered smoke inhalation and was not breathing, Balanciere said.
Firefighters performed CPR before she was taken to Parkland Garland Health Center. She was later transferred to Children’s Medical Center Dallas, officials said.
The girl’s grandmother told officials Wednesday afternoon that the girl was awake and communicating with her father, Balanciere said.
Later Wednesday, a man in his 80s was taken to an area hospital after a fire ripped through the roof of his home in the 2800 block of South Glenbrook Drive, near West Kingsley Road, about 5:30 p.m.
He was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure because he inhaled smoke, Balanciere said.
About 36 firefighters worked to get the fire under control, and it was extinguished by 6:30 p.m.
There were no other injuries reported in the fires. Both remain under investigation.
