LODD: N.Y. paramedic collapsed assessing an unresponsive patient

HAMPTON BAYS, N.Y. – While providing an emergency medical assessment to an unresponsive male patient, paramedic Ralph Oswald, 64, told his crew that he was experiencing chest pain, and immediately collapsed in cardiac arrest.

The incident occurred Monday, February 9, 2015 at approximately 8:58 a.m.

While on-scene CPR was initiated by Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance and Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance Corps personnel. Oswald was transported to Southampton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after unsuccessful out-of-hospital and in-hospital resuscitative efforts.

Funeral arrangements for Oswald are pending, stated the Chief of the Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance in a line of duty death announcement.
