BURLEY, Idaho — A four-year-old boy was taken to the hospital Tuesday after he accidentally was locked in a car at a neighbor’s house.
Cassia County Sheriff deputies and medical responders received a call just before 2 p.m. about the child found in locked in a car at 536 S. 350 E.
The 911 caller said the child was sweating and going in and out of consciousness. The temperature outside was 71 degrees and the vehicle was sitting in direct sunlight.
An EMT who arrived first used a pipe wrench to break a window in the car to gain access to the boy, police said. The EMT put cold towels on the boy and put him in the shade before he was taken to a hospital to be checked out.
The boy’s grandfather told police his daughter had gone to court that morning and he did not know who was supposed to be watching the child. He noticed the child was missing and searched for an hour before finding the boy in the neighbor’s locked car, a police report said. The grandfather tried knocking on the neighbor’s door, but no one answered.
The mother told police she told her father she was going to court but didn’t specifically ask him to watch the boy.
No charges will be filed.
Cassia County Sheriff Jay Heward said the boy was treated at the hospital and released and was doing fine Wednesday.
“With temperatures going into the high 90s this weekend and beyond don’t leave children in the car,” Heward said. The situation can rapidly turn deadly, he said.
