GASTONIA, N.C. —A paramedic got a chance to meet a boy she helped deliver when he enrolled in an EMS agency’s summer academy.

WCNC reported that Gaston County EMS paramedic Susan Nalley reunited with Ben Armstrong, 10, after his mother, Holly, wrote on his application that she wanted to meet the paramedic who helped deliver him.

“I happened to put on Ben’s application, ‘By the way, he was born with you guys so thank you, and if you happened to know who did it, we’d love to say thank you,’” Holly said.

Holly and her husband were racing to the hospital in 2008 after she began experiencing early signs of labor.

“Halfway there, my water broke,” Holly said. “Baby crowned and we started driving like mad people.”

“And then I hit a curb,” her husband, Kevin, said. “I blew out both left tires in my car.”

Kevin said he saw an ambulance coming their way as they sat stuck in an intersection.

“I crossed the yellow line and cut it off to stop it,” he said.

Nalley said she helped deliver Ben in the back of the ambulance as soon as Kevin explained what was going on, and she had to be extra careful because the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck.

“We weren’t able to go onto the hospital even though we were so close because she was so close,” she said.

The family reunited with Nalley on the first day of camp, and Nalley said meeting Ben was “wonderful.”

“He looks a little different now. He’s gotten a little taller,” she said.

“This lady saved my baby,” Holly said. “She saved my baby and I’m eternally grateful.”
