NEW YORK — The lawyer of a man who was arrested for drawing swastikas on FDNY ambulances and a firehouse argued that he should not face stiff bail because he is “an artist.”
NY Post reported that Jem Ibrahimov, who faces felony hate-crime and vandalism charges after allegedly scrawling the symbol, as well as “Nazi racist pigs” and “pedophiles” on four ambulances and a fire station door, pleaded not guilty.
Lawyer Barbara Ho said Ibrahimov should be cut some slack because of his artistic background and the fact that it is his first arrest.
“He’s an artist,” Ho said. “He worked as a painter.”
According to a networking website, Ibrahimov worked as a photographer for the Bulgarian parliament, and Ho said he also worked as an interpreter for the US Army.
Ibrahimov’s bail was set at $10,000 cash or a $50,000 bond.
