BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — A Boynton Beach-area man is facing charges after an 11-month-old ingested his heroin and Xanax pills Tuesday, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office records state.

Christopher Hartley, 33, was arrested Tuesday on a child-neglect charge. A judge set his bail at $10,000 during a hearing Wednesday at the Palm Beach County Jail.

Hartley told sheriff’s authorities that he had heroin pills and half a Xanax bar wrapped in tissue paper. On Tuesday morning he found the tissue paper — and four heroin pills — in the baby’s mouth. The 11-month-old was lethargic and breathing slowly, records state. Hartley tried to make the baby throw up the drugs, records state. A woman at the home called 911.

Paramedics gave the baby nasal Narcan and oxygen. The infant was taken to Bethesda Hospital East’s pediatric-emergency room, according to an arrest report.

That woman later told authorities that she and Hartley had struggled with drug addictions for years.

Hartley’s relationship to the baby is redacted from sheriff’s records.

The infant’s condition was not immediately known.
