NEW YORK — Three FDNY Paramedics Joe Hudak and Eddy Perez, and EMT Joe Fortis, are now worldwide EMS competition champions after defeating more than 40 teams from 16 countries in Olsztyn, Poland in early September.
“The guys did an incredible job,” said EMT Fortis, the team leader. “Everyone was flawless.”
The three-day competition required teams to perform a variety of tasks, including pulling a man out of the river and immobilizing him, treating two victims of cardiac arrest simultaneously and assisting 10 victims of a four-vehicle accident.
The team received first place honors, defeating some teams that included physicians.
Although they spent most of their time in Poland competing, the rest of their time was just as hectic.
During a mock explosion staged by the Polish Fire Department, a child got a laceration on his neck. The FDNY team popped the window of an ambulance in place for the demonstration and treated the boy’s wound.
They also were guests of the U.S. ambassador to Poland, spending time with him and his family at their residence.
