Maine city carries on its tradition of free-standing EMS

WELLS, Maine — When you call 911, you hope the ambulance and EMTs arrive quickly and provide the assistance you need as efficiently and effectively as possible. Rarely do you think about where the ambulance is coming from or how the EMTs are managed or how the service is organized. As a result, those details, interesting as they might be, often go unnoticed.

There are many interesting ways in which emergency medical service organizations developed in towns across Maine. The Wells Emergency Medical Service is a case in point.

“In 1990, the organization was formed,” said Tom Oliver, President of the WEMS Board of Directors. “In the late 1980s, the town operated under the Wells Beach Hose Company [for ambulance services]. They did an outstanding job for the community. When the town went with one fire chief, they told the town they didn’t want to do it anymore.” ...
