Kan. EMS director dies while on duty

LARNED, Kan. — Larned Emergency Medical Services director Virginia K. Shearrer, 63, died while she was on duty Monday morning after completing an early morning emergency medical response call.

According to Gary Heartman of the Larned EMS, Shearrer was completing an emergency medical call late Sunday night or early Monday morning to the St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. Shortly after arriving at the emergency room, Shearrer complained of suffering from a headache. After initial treatment at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, at 3 a.m. Shearrer was transported by medivac helicopter to Via Christi Regional Medical Center St. Francis Campus in Wichita, where she later died.

She was pronounced dead at approximately noon Monday. It is believed that Shearrer died of a blood clot in the brain, or a brain aneurysm. City officials and hospital spokespersons were not releasing any official statements.
