Details emerge in shooting of N.C. paramedic

An EMS paramedic was shot shortly before midnight, Sunday July 30, in the driveway of a residence at Wolf Laurel.

Tami Stephen, a resident of Yancey County who works as a paramedic with Madison County Emergency Medical Services, was shot once in the chest. As of Monday afternoon, she is in serious but stable condition at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Joseph Boyer Candler, Jr., 68, of Wolf Laurel, on a charge of felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. He was being held in the Madison County jail in lieu of $750,000 bond.
