DC Fire and EMS, AMR enter into agreement

The company will maintain a fleet of ambulances to respond to 911 calls during high-volume periods

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. — American Medical Response has entered into an agreement with D.C. Fire and EMS to deliver services for basic life support emergency calls, enabling municipal first responders to focus on critical patients. The agreement is based on success AMR has achieved with similar models in other major U.S. cities.

Utilizing a fleet of dedicated BLS ambulances, AMR clinicians will respond to 911 calls that have been triaged on scene by DCFEMS as requiring that level of treatment and transport. This arrangement will provide DCFEMS additional bandwidth to treat Advanced Life Support (ALS) patients.

"Caring for the citizens and visitors of our nation’s capital has been an immense source of pride for our clinicians and organization for many years and we are honored to now also do so within the community’s 911 system," said Edward Van Horne, president and CEO of AMR. "AMR is proud that DCFEMS has recognized the value of our clinical expertise, operational experience and integrated EMS technologies and we look forward to supporting their mission."

AMR is a familiar face in the D.C. Metro. Currently, it works in partnership with DCFEMS to provide medical support at the U.S. Park Service’s locations and events.

AMR will establish and maintain a dedicated fleet of ambulances and hire additional emergency medical technicians to respond to incidents within the District during the high call volume period from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m., seven days a week.

"AMR is committed to providing exemplary emergency medical services to the residents of Washington, D.C.," stated Thomas McEntee, AMR East Region CEO. "We are confident the complementary emergency response teams of DCFEMS and AMR will lead to decreased response times, improved patient satisfaction and a healthier D.C."

AMR is expected to commence service in the next 30 days.
